November 18, 2022 @ 9:30 am - 5:30 pm

Description: Crisis Intervention and De-Escalation training is a full-day class that utilizes a combination of PowerPoint presentations, videos and classroom activities to educate staff on safe, appropriate ways to support people in crisis.   The class maintains a human approach that is grounded in dignity and respect.  While providing specific tools for the staff toolbox, it will also increase self-awareness and address the importance of self-care.  Students will receive a certificate verifying 7 CEU hours, approved for the competency based and longevity add on.

  • Relationships:  This course will explore developing/maintaining relationships, & key components of a healthy relationship.  Staff will use Maslow’s Hierarchy & Domains of Safety to identify unmet needs and provide “felt” safety of people they support.
  • Communication – The class will explore the role of communication in supporting the individuals we serve.  The training will define roles and methods of communication, and the importance of authentic communication. Non-verbal communication and visual supports will also be addressed, as well as concepts of empathy, reflection and active listening.
  • Conflict and Crisis – Students will learn about the human stress response and why people respond the way they do in a crisis.  A crisis cycle model will be provided, with staff responses to each step in the model.  Specific non-physical, de-escalation techniques will be provided to help people calm and feel safe.
  • Vicarious Trauma – Awareness of trauma informed care continues to grow, as does its role in the workplace.  This training will educate students on the characteristics and risks of vicarious trauma.  Training will include tools and concepts to mitigate/reduce the effects of vicarious trauma, and how to promote resilience within themselves.
